Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly

Butterfly Macro Paintings

Protographium marcellus

This butterfly is found in the Eastern part of the United States. The caterpillar feeds only on species of trees within the genus Asimina, which is commonly known as the Pawpaw.  The caterpillars ingest chemicals from the Pawpaw which are retained in the body tissues. This helps the  caterpillar and the adult, from being ingested by birds and other predators.
